Pine Guitar Challenge 2020

I’ve got something in me that wants to build a series of guitars out of one type of wood (in start contrast of the the monstrosity I’m making for the Great Guitar Build Off 2020 out of everything). So when Tomster from IP Guitars announced he and a friend were doing a pine guitar challenge I thought I’d like a piece of that action and invited myself to join in.

I never expected it to stretch over 9 long videos!

What we ended up with was a guitar with a pine body, a pine neck and a pine fretboard. From firewood, an old desk and a floor board respectively.

Months later, despite having a few truss rod tweaks, we have a guitar that I’m still playing on a daily basis. Yay for pine πŸ™‚

Raining 5 Guitars (Guitar Challenge) – Learning to play Episode 15

Chris Learns Guitar

Completely inspired by Mary Spender and Pete Cottrell, I decided that it’s about time I made a video and to further the challenge I wanted to do it from beginning to end in one day. I’m currently trying to learn Raining Blood by Slayer, so it seemed ideal.

It turns out that I had to do it over two evenings (I can’t really start working on anything for YouTube before 8pm) The end product isn’t remotely how I envisioned it, meaning I need a lot more practise at playing, recording, mastering and making videos.

Guitars used:

  • Fenix Jazz Bass (Fender Jazz bass copy)
  • Fender Mexican Stratocaster with a Seymour Duncan hot rail
  • Yamaha Pacifica 120SD, adapted, with Warman G-Rail
  • Brownsville Choirboy with Warman Mini Humbuckers
  • Behringer iAXE 393

Another video for me to use as a marker of progress in the future πŸ™‚

The Cheapest Guitar Body on Amazon and eBay (Shite-o-caster, part 2)

Part 2 of the shite-o-caster build, it’s the cheapest body I could find new. Just Β£20 (about 22 Euros or 27 dollars)

Often listed as “Wood type electric guitar accessories ST electric guitar barrel material maple guitar barrel body”

I wasn’t expecting much, in fact some of the reviews were damning, so I was actually pleasantly surprised and will be happily using this in my guitar build.

It’s certainly not without faults, there’s tear-through in the body of the wood, there’s glue infused in the wood which hampers stain take up and paulownia isn’t the most solid of timbers πŸ™‚

The next video will be treating and finishing the body.

I got the SODIAL one, but the pictures look identical.

Slayer Raining Blood (failure) – Chris Learns Guitar episode 16

Chris Learns Guitar

I failed! But that’s ok, time to move on. Playing Slayer’s Raining Blood is something I’m not ready for yet. But here’s a historical video of me playing riffs at measured speeds so I can come back to this and see if I’ve improved enough to play it. Gear used: Heavily modded Yamaha Pacifica 120SD with Warman G-Rail pickup Audio Assault’s Dominator VST plugin I’ll put pictures of the settings in a blog post later.

Part 1 – It started with a neck – Shite-o-caster

I’ve decided to build a guitar and to do it on the cheap, but hopefully come up with something still playable. I thought it would be more fun to buy things separately rather than get a kit because I already had a neck. This recording is the 4th or 5th take… and even this was almost had to be abandoned due to a passing aeroplane. So yeah, essentially I’m building a partscaster or partocaster!

Blink 182 Cover – All The Small Things – Learning to play episode 14

After hearing Jennifer James and JJ’s One Girl Band attempt this I commented something about attempting this. The response being “Go on then”… so here it is. Weeks later!

Really hoping to start turning songs around quicker as my ability to learn and stamina improves.

Anyway, this is another market of my progress at learning how to play the guitar properly at last.

The Guitar Show – Birmingham – 2018

I’ve never been to a guitar show before so had little idea what to expect. The answer to that is a mixture of guitar store and a jumble sale.Β  What I wasn’t prepared for was the noise, I don’t like crowds too and whilst some bits were chockablock you were able to chart an irregular course around.

Before going I’d made a list of who I wanted to visit and managed to hit most of them – some just were nowhere to be seen. They might have been cohabiting with another exhibitor – but were not on the plan.

Judas Priest – Breaking the Law Cover – Learning to play Episode 13

Chris Learns Guitar

HELLO! The guitar is a friend’s Mexican Strat with Seymour Duncan hotrails at the bridge. Recorded in Reaper using the Marshall JCM900 and Boss DS-1 VSTs from the SimulAnalog suite. It’s been a long time. Way too long.

So I picked a song that is known for being a good beginner song. It turned out to be a lot harder than I anticipated! πŸ™‚ I’ve a long way to go… The timing of the chorus part took me ages to figure out… it’s only two notes! Then I decided to do the bass part finger plucked, when the original is done with a pick. …so I had to spend a long time building up the stamina to make it all the way through the song. I’ve learnt many things though, such as not relying on reading the music and learning the parts. In the end, it’s a bit messier than I anticipated. But I’m happy enough to move onto the next challenge. Whatever that’ll be… Join me on the journey of this channel with me learning to play guitar finally by subscribing to this channel πŸ™‚
